This made a HUGE difference in my realistic drawing skills. A common drawing skill that people use is focusing and drawing the object that is in front of them. They draw the exterior lines of the objects in their view. but what often happens is that things are out of proportions and the objects are not in the correct 'spots' or placement.
By adding this simple technique, realistic drawings are in proper proportions and placement on the plane of the paper /canvas etc. This technique is drawing with the positive and negative shapes in mind. The positive is the actual objects in the drawing. The negative shapes are the spaces between the objects. So it is just as important to pay attention to the negative shapes as the positive. When you do this, you will have your drawing/painting matching the realistic world.
