Title: Unearthing the Past: My Journey from Babysitting to Artifact Inventor

Welcome back to #ThirdDegreeThursday! Today, we're delving into the world of employment, and I want to hear about your first job experiences as well. But before we dive into your stories, let me share mine.

Babysitting and Lawn Mowing: The Classic Teen Jobs

Like many teenagers, my first foray into the world of work began with babysitting and lawn mowing. These part-time gigs provided a taste of responsibility and a way to earn some pocket money, but they were far from the full-time, day-in, day-out jobs that would later shape my career path.

A Short-Lived Stint at a Small Shop

At the age of 16 or 17, I landed a job at a small shop that sold vitamins and herbs. It seemed like an exciting opportunity to learn about natural remedies and health products. However, my enthusiasm was short-lived. After just one month, my mom, who happened to be an accountant, discovered that the shop was paying me less than the minimum wage. It was a disappointing experience to realize that the employer was dishonest, and it was decided that it would be best not to work for someone with such ethics.

The Summer of Discovery: Artifact Inventor at Fort Edmonton Park

My journey took a fascinating turn when I secured a summer job during my university years as an Artifact Inventor at Fort Edmonton Park. This historic site, with its replicas and original buildings, was a living testament to the past. My role allowed me to get up close and personal with artifacts that were previously behind windowed displays.

Imagine being surrounded by relics of a bygone era, each with its own story to tell. Some artifacts were instantly recognizable, while others left me puzzled. It was like having access to a time machine, and my job was to unearth the secrets these objects held.

The Joy of Discovery

One of the most rewarding aspects of this job was the opportunity to learn about history hands-on. I found joy in deciphering the purpose of mysterious tools, understanding the significance of clothing styles, and piecing together the stories of the people who once used these items. It was like solving a historical puzzle with every artifact I encountered.

In addition to the tangible treasures, working at Fort Edmonton Park surrounded by passionate historians and educators was incredibly enriching. Their insights and knowledge deepened my appreciation for the past and inspired me to continue exploring history even after the summer ended.

In Conclusion

From humble beginnings as a babysitter and lawn mower to a brief, eye-opening stint at a small shop, my journey into the workforce eventually led me to a summer of discovery as an Artifact Inventor. These early experiences, both challenging and rewarding, played a significant role in shaping my perspective on work and ignited a passion for history that continues to burn bright.

Now, it's your turn! I'd love to hear about your first job experiences and how they influenced your path in life. Share your stories in the comments below, and let's celebrate the diverse journeys that have led us to where we are today. #ThirdDegreeThursday
