When I heard Gabor Mate was writing another book, I immediately went searching for it. Naturally it wasn't out yet. But a few months passed, it showed up and I ordered it. "The Myth of Normal" arrived at my doorstep via Amazon. I've just read the intro and I'm already underlying sections. 'Worse yet, we have become accustomed - or perhaps better to say acculturated - to so much of what plagues us. It has become, for a lack of a better word, normal....When we can look soberly at what we as a culture have normalized about health and illness, and realize that it is not, in fact, the way things are meant or fated to be.'
I have been a fan of Gabor Mate's work and words since the book "When the Body Says No!" helped me and changed my life. It was about stress and how stress can effect the body. I saw myself in the book. It effected me so much that I decided that my job as a Junior and Senior High teacher was causing me more harm than good. From that point, I took early retirement. I miss the kids and the projects I created with them. But as for the stress, I've never looked back!
