World of Journals

Welcome to #TuesdayToolsAndTechniques! Today, we're delving into the fascinating world of journals and exploring what sets them apart. You might be surprised to learn that not all journals are alike, and one of the key factors that distinguishes them is the type of paper they use. So, let's take a closer look at this intriguing aspect!

Different Artistic Preferences

Imagine this: different people have different artistic preferences. Some love to paint, some enjoy collage, others find joy in drawing, and there are those who delve into the realm of printmaking. Each of these activities puts unique demands on the paper they require. For instance, when painting, the paper needs to withstand the moisture and weight of the paint. It's like a punishment for the paper, but it needs to hold strong!

Weight of Paper

One way paper is differentiated is by its weight. Let's take the example of 90lb paper. This means it refers to 500 sheets of standardized paper measuring 32x20 inches. On the other hand, you might come across paper labeled as 140lb, indicating that 500 sheets of that paper weigh 140 pounds. By looking at it this way, it's clear that 140lb paper is thicker than 90lb paper. In the world of journals, you'll find variations like 90lb, and 140lb papers, but not 300lb. So, if you're planning to indulge in painting, you'll need a heavier paper that can handle the water and paint. Although it's worth noting that the heaviest paper commonly used in journals is 140lb.

Tooth of the Paper

Another factor to consider is the "tooth" of the paper. Does it have a smooth, glass-like surface, or does it possess a bit of tooth, meaning a slight roughness? Generally, journals tend to have paper with a bit of tooth. If you prefer the smoothness, don't worry! There are journals out there specifically designed with smooth paper, catering to your preferences.

You Choose

So, whether you're a painter, collager, drawer, or printmaker, understanding the characteristics of journal paper is essential for finding the perfect fit. Remember, not all journals are created equal, and it's exciting to explore the various options available. Happy journaling, and stay tuned for more engaging discussions here at #TuesdayToolsAndTechniques!
