ART

Last Art & Soul newsletter I shared about lines, while this one I am focusing on the element of shape. A shape is created when lines are joined together to enclose an area. By combining two horizontal lines and two vertical lines together, you create a square. Shapes have the dimensions of length and width.

Shapes can be divided into two categories: geometric and organic. Everyone knows geometric shapes when they see one: circles, triangle, square, rectangle, heptagon and so on. What makes these shapes geometric is that math (geometry) can be used to create them; they are manmade. Organic shapes seem to follow no rules; they are natural… like a blob of paint, a leaf, an apple.

It is helpful to use shapes in blocking in main shapes in a drawing or painting. Also, in another matter, it is helpful to draw things in proportion when using positive and negative shapes. What the artist does is focuses on the negative shapes (as well as the positive) and draws that on the canvas. The artist is most often successful when using this technique.

So, did you learn a few things about shapes? I imagine it was more information than in elementary school!! Next Art & Soul Newsletter I will share about form.

SOUL

It’s hard to believe it has been a year. Last year, I came home March 7th and in two days the province was in lock down mode. Being that I stay home and work, I have only seen retail workers (grocery et al) and have no contact with anyone else. I miss people and I miss hugging people. And then, I am saddened about how many people have died. And so many other thoughts.

I heard on a newscast that anxiety and depression has been on the rise. I share this because I want you to be aware of how you are feeling. Are you feeling anxious? Do you find yourself depressed? Please get help. Yes, you can help yourself (journaling, talking to a friend, exercise, meditation…), but sometimes you need professional help (counselling, medication…). If you find yourself in a low mood and no drive, day after day, you may need help. The first step is the hardest, but it’s important to take. Please take care of yourself.
