different types of brushes

Welcome to my bi-monthly newsletter that will provide you information about classes, art supplies, techniques and soulful tidbits! So, let's begin...

SUPPLIES and TIPS

Brushes. There are a variety of types and sizes. Often the one you need is up to personal preference. So today I will share the types and different sizes, so when you go to the art store, you may feel more confident choosing which brush is best.

First of all, let’s start with the types of brushes. Each brush can differ from another due to the number of bristles and how they are cut/formed to create their shape. The most common brushes are the round and flat brushes, however check the other brushes listed, as you might like how the other brush lays down the paint. The different types of brushes are: Round, Flat, Bright, Filbert, Fan, Angle, Mop and Rigger.

Secondly, let’s share about the brush size. Brush size is dependent on the amount of space you have to paint. It is also reliant on the amount of detail you need to add. Looking at these two factors will help you decide what brush size you need.

4/0 is the thinnest round brush, while a #24 brush is almost 3/4" in width. so for round brushes the numbers go as: (smallest to largest) 4/0, 3/0, 2/0, 0 (1/32"), 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 (15/32"), 20, 24 (11/16"). For Flat, Bright, Filbert brushes the numbers go as: (smallest to largest) 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12,14 (15/32"), 16, 18, 20, 24 (31/32").  There are also Flat brushes that are two, three, four inches wide etc. These larger brush sizes are for covering paint in large areas.

Finally, brushes have different purposes. Brushes can be synthetic or natural hair. The natural hair brushes (ox hair, sable etc.) are much more expensive due to the fact that they come from animals. Seasoned artists often have a preference what type of hair they prefer. Also there are different brushes for watercolour and acrylic/oil media. Watercolour bristles need to hold water in it, while acrylic/oil brushes need to be stiffer as they need to hold the thicker paint. As well, art stores have brushes divided into sections for price range; there are sections such as economy, scholastic (school), academic and master.

The next time you go to the art store (in reality or virtually) have a look at the different types, sizes and purpose of brushes. I hope this article helped you in your awareness of brushes. Be open to people’s suggestions, but rely more on what you like best. Happy exploring, happy painting.

SOUL

For this 'Soul' write-up I randomly shuffled and picked out one card from Gabrielle Bernstein’s Super Attractor cards. the card read: "The Universe powerfully responds the instant I realign with love."...

Love is a powerful thing. Often when we think of love we think of a relationship between ourselves and another human being. With love we think of actionable words such as kindness, caring, compassion, passion and patience; these words, in action, can transform a relationship for the better. And yet, I want you to think of love in another way. Think of love as a relationship with yourself. We often find this to be challenging as we were raised to think about the other person. But think about this, you can only be there for another person in relation to how you can be there for yourself. So, give yourself kindness, care, compassion, passion and patience. Take time for yourself. Do what makes your heart sing (perhaps an art project?).
