10 Things Most People Don't Know About Me
Hey there, lovely readers!
I thought it would be fun to share a few things about myself that most people don’t know. So, here we go—10 things you might find surprising!
-
Backward Shoelaces
When I was little, my mom tried to teach me how to tie my shoelaces. I couldn't see what she was doing, so she faced me, and I ended up learning to tie them backwards! It’s a quirky little habit that’s stuck with me ever since. -
Eye Surgery at Two
At the tender age of two, I had an operation on both my eyes to correct a condition known as 'wandering eyes.' They overcorrected, so my eyes sometimes go cross-eyed, especially when I was younger. It’s a unique part of my journey! Because of my eye correction, my mom had a special way of knowing when I was sick. She’d look at my eyes and say, "Barbara, look at me please." If they crossed, she knew I wasn’t feeling well. -
Early Entrepreneur
Around the age of 8, I would make kool-aid and take a large and small cup and sell my liquid refreshment, across to metal fence, to thirsty golfers on the final ninth tee. The cost was twenty-five and ten cents. Needless to say, I made some candy coin. -
Summer Hair Magic
I have dark brown hair and blue eyes but my hair used to turn white in the summer! My mom kept clippings, and you can see how my hair got a bit darker each year. It’s like a natural timeline of my childhood summers. -
The Edith-Anne Haircut
When I was seven, my friend Edith-Anne gave me a free haircut. I was so excited to tell my frugal mom, but the haircut was quite the disaster—short and very irregular. Let’s just say, my mom wasn’t as thrilled as I was! -
Early Artistry
I have drawings from when I was just two years old—detailed pictures of a baby, a house, and a pumpkin. Art has always been a big part of my life, and I’ve even received awards for my creations over the years. -
Singing My Heart Out
I’ve always loved to sing. I won the music award in Grade six after my teacher heard me singing on the playground. In my twenties, I sang in a choir with professional musicians and Julliard graduates, simply because I loved it. -
Award-Winning Art Teacher
I’ve also received awards for my art teaching. One of my proudest moments was getting a grant to create "The Art of Organization: A Teacher's Resource for Teaching Art." When I submitted it to the Alberta Teacher’s Association, they said it was one of the best they’d ever received. -
Rings of Remembrance
I wear two rings that represent my parents. I used part of my inheritance to buy them, so I always have a piece of them with me. These rings are perfect reminders of the love and legacy they left behind. -
Spinal Surgery Survivor
Years ago, a growth was found on my spine, causing extreme pain and mobility issues. I underwent surgery, knowing there was a risk I could die on the table. I survived, but the growth returned larger a year later. Now, I manage the pain with a colorful combination of medications. I have learnt so much about resiliency and self-love.
So, there you have it—10 things most people don’t know about me! Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoyed getting to know a bit more about me.
