What is Gold Leaf

Today's #TuesdayToolsAndTechniques is about gold leaf. First off, the gold leaf I use isn't actual gold, though those who use gold leaf in cuisine, use real gold leaf. Gold leaf is a very, very thin leaflet of substance. It is so thinly layered that each sheet falls a part easily. It is used for decorative purposes or an additive to a work of art.

How to apply Gold Leaf

To apply the gold leaf, you prepare the surface by dusting it. Then you brush on the adhesive; you brush the adhesive exactly where you want the gold leaf. It can be in an area or even a thin line. Then you apply the gold leaf. Don't worry if you do not cut/pull enough gold leaf for the area that you want to cover. Most likely the gold leaf sheet will rip a part and you will apply the gold leaf in sections. Then take a dry brush and push the gold leaf into the adhesive and brush the leaf around. Most likely there will be excess; what I do with the excess is keep it in a jar for future use. Once it has time to set, you will place a sealant on top of the gold leaf section. Then you are done!

How can Gold Leaf be used

I love using the gold leaf in my abstract work, as I am in love with the look of gold. And I actually enjoy the process of adhering it to my work. I have also used the gold leaf on paper mache bowls and containers that I used. It can also be applied to wooden objects (ie frame), paper, canvas and 3D objects.

Different types of Leaf

There are different types of leafs. Naturally there is the gold leaf, but there is also silver, copper and variegated metal. The gold leaf and the other various leafs can be found at craft stores and art stores. The application of these different leaves is the same as the gold leaf.

So now you know what gold leaf is and how to use it. Now all you have to do is go out and buy some and play with it. Enjoy!
