Last Art & Soul Insider, I covered the beginning aspect of colour. Now I will include secondary and tertiary colours. To freshen your memory, blue, red and yellow are Primary Colours. They are considered primary colours because no colour combination can make them.
To explain how to create Secondary colours we will do a little math!
Primary + another Primary = Secondary. So, for example:
Yellow + (mixed with) Red = Orange. In total there are three Secondary colours, they are Orange, Green and Purple.
To explain how to create Tertiary colours, we will do some more math. On either side of the Primary, there are two Secondary’s.
Primary + closest to Secondary = Tertiary. So, for example:
Yellow + Orange = Yellow-Orange and
Primary + other next to Secondary = Tertiary
Yellow + Green = Yellow-Green
Did you know you could create brown by combining a certain Primary with a certain Secondary? This special combination if called Complementary colours. These two colours have the greatest contrast between two colours and they are directly opposite to each other on the Colour Wheel. So, for example:
Yellow (Primary)+ Violet (straight across from) = Brownish grey
Red (Primary)+ Green (straight across from) = another type of Brown
Blue (Primary)+ Orange (straight across from) = another type of Brown. To remember these Complementary colours think of Christmas (Red and Green), Easter (Yellow and Violet) and Edmonton Oilers (Blue and Orange).
Next Art & Soul Insider we will cover more about the colourful ways of colours!
SOUL
It’s good to give. Everyone knows that. Ever since we were young, we were taught to think of others and share. I thought of this a fair bit when I was participating in the recent Sorrentino’s Compassion House fundraiser called Walk Her Way. I was raising funds for a woman that I do not know, but will stay in the House just like me. And I know it was such a blessing for me to have a home while I underwent radiation, for 31 days. But the added benefit was the discount for the room rate; I only had to pay $25 per night. I know both of these things will mean a lot to this woman as well.
I am also giving back by hopefully encouraging others to donate, I will be creating three works of art to be drawn for by all who donated. When I gave these donations of money and art for this fundraiser, I felt good; I felt good, as I knew I was helping someone else. This benefit of feeling good because I was helping someone is called a social benefit, as one person helps another. But there is another social benefit; it has to do with the aspect that it helps a social program in our community. It truly is a win- win.
Studies from Harvard, and more, have found that there are benefits to giving/helping another person; they are:
- Lower blood pressure
- Increased self-esteem
- Less depression
- Lower stress levels
- Longer life and
- Greater happiness and satisfaction. (From various Internet sources)
You can give to a fundraiser, help someone with their yard work, donate your time to the Food Bank or local animal shelter, give a gift card for a massage and more, are examples of how one can give. But the simplest way of giving is giving a smile to the person you cross paths with. Do it and feel better!
Sidenote: Until June 6th, you can donate to Walk Her Way for Compassion House at www.justgiving.com/barbara-burns4 Now, please only give if you feel the necessity to do so....and not out of guilt, since I just talked about 'giving!!'
