ART
The beginning of this month I introduced to you Rhythm. Now, I’ll present you to the Principle of White Space. White Space is the area between elements in your image. Despite it being called White Space, it does not need to be white. It can be any colour, pattern or texture.
White Space can be identified as either micro White Space or macro White Space. With micro White Space, there is small space between the design elements. This can be seen in how allowing more 'white space' in a layout for a written work, can make a big difference visually. See how the layout on the left seems to have more breathing space between all its elements....compared to the layout on the right, which seems very tight.
While macro White Space has large spaces between the design elements. Often with macro White Space, it has a dominant image due to the large empty space surrounding it; there is an object that is surrounded by large space.
Are you leaving enough white space between objects in your work? It gives your images breathing space and it makes your work more appealing.
Next Art & Soul Insider newsletter, I will share the last Principle of Design.
SOUL
I have a confession to share. Lately I have felt uninspired… not wanting to create. Forget about the large pieces, but even the smaller, quick little ones in my journal. And yet I know it is good for me as I release pent up feelings and doodle away any down emotions.
It happens. Every now and again, we feel flat and have no desire to create. That’s okay. Life has its’ ebbs and flows. The key is to listen to those moments, don’t push them away. Let them guide you. They usually come into our lives because we have been pushing ourselves in other ways. Perhaps pick up a book and read, take a walk outside, have a nap and/or call a good friend. Usually doing at least one of these things, shifts something in me. And if doing one of those things doesn’t do it for me, I will try doing those things for a week or more.
And then, I come back to my art. I start with the smaller, quick little ones in my journal. I doodle; I create lines. Repeating over and over. I find it to be quite soothing and meditative. And I find that I am making art once again.
