ART
Last few Art & Soul Insider’s, I shared about colour. This newsletter, I will share about the elements of form and value.
Some people consider value to be an element of its own from colour. While others believe that value is under the element umbrella of colour. I am of the belief of the later, but will share it today none the less. Value is the lightness and darkness of an image. It actually works well with the element of form as the lightness and darkness of an object gives the object shape/form to our eyes.
So what is form? First let’s go back and define shape. Shapes are lines put together that are two-dimensional (Length and width). It is when shapes are combined together that they create forms. Forms are three-dimensional (length, width and depth). To be more specific, forms can be Geometric like cubes (square shapes put together: sides, top and bottom), spheres or cones. Organic forms are more from nature like people, animals, leaves etc.
SOUL
Along with my online classes, I have some mindfulness practices, guided visualizations and meditations. I believe, and studies support my belief, that art heals a person’s emotional/mental well-being. So, I decided to not only share art but well-being techniques in my online classes; a double wham-o of healing.
One of my favorite well-being practices is called Hand on Heart, from the book Pause, by Kim Davies. This is something that you can do anytime and is a wonderful pause to the day’s busyness.
- Rest your hand on your heart area – you can do this standing up or sitting down. Breathe gently, tuning in to the beating of your heart.
- Be aware of the warmth from your hand on your heart area as you continue to breathe. Let you inhalations and exhalations follow their natural pace and rhythm.
- See what feelings, if any, you can be aware of in the heart area. Try to accept whatever is there, whether that is numbness, happiness, anger…
- If you have a sense of something that you need right now – relaxation, peace, comfort – imagine that each in-breath is bringing this to your heart area. You could try saying “peace,” or whatever it is you feel you need as you breathe.
- Gently release you hand and open your eyes before continuing with your day, taking this sense of connection with you.
