ART

Today’s Element of Design is Space. In every art work there is space. Space is the area around, above, and within an object. It also is a feeling of depth or three dimensions. Today, I will focus on the space where it is the area around, above, and within an object with the famous American artist Andrew Wyeth. In this space it can be the space between other shapes in your drawing.

Or, if your drawing has a pattern, it is the space between the shapes to show a pattern (as in the window panes).

Space isn’t just about filling an area, but space can show emptiness.

Also there is space called positive and negative space (some say positive and negative ‘shapes’). Positive space is the subject(s) or areas of interest, while negative space is the area around the subject(s) or areas of interest. By knowing positive and negative space, it can help make you a better, and more accurate, drawer.

Next time, I will share another aspect of space, which is three dimensional space in drawing.

SOUL

Summertime usually means holidays and time away from home. Now, with COVID, this might have changed for most of us and made us a little bit more homebound. We had a two day getaway to the city. We saw a movie where we were the only ones in the theatre! And then we went to Fort Edmonton Park and saw all the renovations and the amazing and wonderful new installation of the Indigenous section. I was moved by the Indigenous words, songs and stories.

It was so nice to get away, a change in scenery and a change in routine. Sometimes that is all we need. And through that change, we find ourselves rejuvenated and refreshed. You don’t need to go far, but do something you like and enjoy.

We all need a break, a break in the continuity of things. A change can renew us and provide us with a change of perspective. That is why Labour Unions, many moons ago, gave us the weekend, so that we could have a rest from work and the every day. Our bodies, minds and spirits need rest.

Our rest and breaks don’t need to be expensive. It doesn’t have to be a holiday, though a holiday vacation away is nice. It could be someone else makes dinner. You take a picnic, with your loved ones, to a park. Take a little jaunt on your bike. Make an afternoon, and evening, of NetFlix and your favourite movies. You get the idea.

So be good to yourself and have a getaway either big or small. It will make a difference to your life. Take care of you.
