Happy Thanksgiving! A Time for Gratitude
As Thanksgiving arrives in Canada, I am reminded of how deeply connected we are to our land and its rich history. Not too long ago, one or two generations from us, many Canadians were harvesting the fruits of their labor at this time of year. While our lives today might look different, the importance of taking a moment to give thanks remains unchanged.
In the midst of our busy lives, it’s easy to forget the blessings we’re surrounded by. Every day, I make it a practice to write down three things I am grateful for. Sometimes, it's as simple as "I am breathing" or "The sun is shining." Gratitude has a special way of grounding us, bringing us back to the present moment, and nurturing our hearts.
On this Thanksgiving, I invite you to pause and reflect on some of the many things we can be grateful for. Here are 10 aspects that may resonate with you:
1. Our Health – Whether we're in perfect health or healing, the ability to live and breathe is a gift.
2. Loved Ones – Family, friends, and those who bring joy and connection to our lives.
3. Nature's Beauty – From the changing fall leaves to the crisp air, our land is a constant reminder of beauty.
4. The Harvest – A reminder of the food on our tables and the work it takes to nourish us.
5. Creativity – The ability to express ourselves through art, craft, music, or writing.
6. Comfort – Whether it’s a cozy home, warm blanket, or a hot cup of tea, small comforts are treasures.
7. Growth – The lessons we learn through challenges, as each step shapes who we are.
8. Community – The support and connection from those around us, near or far.
9. Moments of Joy – The laughter of children, the quiet of a morning, or a shared smile.
10. The Present – Each moment is an opportunity to be grateful, to slow down, and to appreciate life.
As we reflect on these blessings, here are 5 ways you can add moments of gratitude to your daily life:
1. Start a Gratitude Journal – Write down three things you're grateful for every day. It can be as simple as “I have food on my plate” or “I saw a beautiful sunrise.”
2. Pause Before Meals – Take a moment of thanks before eating to appreciate the food and those who worked to bring it to your table.
3. Morning Reflection – Begin your day with a quiet moment to acknowledge one thing you're looking forward to.
4. Gratitude Walks – As you walk through nature or your neighborhood, notice and silently appreciate the small wonders around you.
5. Send a Thank You Note – Express your gratitude to someone special with a kind word or message.
This Thanksgiving, I am especially grateful for you – the vibrant community that inspires me to continue creating and sharing art that heals and connects us all. Thank you for being part of this journey.
Wishing you and your loved ones a warm and joyful Thanksgiving!
With gratitude,
Barbara
